Cultural & Heritage in Town

Cape Town is not known as the “Mother City” for nothing. It is here that one comes across a 240-000-000-year-old mountain, and some of the earliest ever recorded communities lived in sight of Table Mountain 27 000 years ago.

The Castle of Good Hope

  • A pentagonal fortress built between 1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East India Company, as the oldest building in the country, the Castle of Good Hope naturally has more than a few ghost stories.
  • The Castle houses the components of oil paintings, furniture and decorative arts.

Cultural & Heritage out of Town

Today, the Cape is a thriving modern hotspot where most inhabitants have forgotten the rich history. Take a quick walk back in time.

  • In 1688 the first non-Dutch immigrants arrived in the Cape, and they were the French Huguenots.
  • They brought with them experience in wine making and formed the town of Franschhoek.
  • The English military successfully invaded the Dutch held Cape Colony in 1795 with the “Battle of Muizenberg”.

Huguenot Memorial Monument

  • The Huguenot Memorial Monument in Franschhoek was inaugurated on April 17th, 1948.
  • With its simplicity and elegance of line the monument displays a historic French character.
  • The female figure, with the Bible in her right hand and broken chain in her left hand, personifies the spirit of religious freedom.

Dorp Street, Stellenbosch

  • A stroll down Dorp Street is a charming experience that resonates through the centuries.
  • The distinctive Cape-Dutch architecture, in this, the oldest town in South Africa, which combines gorgeously with ancient, gnarled oaks to line this old wagon road.
  • This entire street is a national heritage sight.

PAARL MOUNTAIN

Afrikaans Language Monument

  • The Afrikaans Language Monument is located on a hill overlooking Paarl, Western Cape Province.
  • Officially opened on 10 October 1975, it commemorates the semi centenary of Afrikaans being declared an official language of South Africa separate from Dutch.
